What Medical Conditions Qualify for Free Prescriptions in England?
5 June 2026 3 min read

Prescription costs can add up quickly, especially if you're managing a long-term condition. In England, certain medical conditions entitle people to free NHS prescriptions.
These include conditions such as diabetes that requires medication, epilepsy needing continuous treatment, and a permanent fistula, among others. You'll usually need a valid medical exemption certificate.
If you're not sure whether you qualify, your GP or pharmacist can help you apply for the right exemption so you don't pay more than you need to.
